What is a bug zapper
A device that attracts the flying insects and them kill them is known as a bug zapper. They are usually electrically charged and use light to attract the insects. This light source, usually a florescent lamp, is enclosed in an interleaved electrical grid. The distance between two bare electric wires is of about 2mm. As soon as the insect touched the two wires with high voltage between them, it gets electrocuted. The bug zapper has a high voltage power supply and can generate 2,000 volts which is enough to conduct through an insect’s body but not sufficient to spark across the air gap. Bug zapper has been named because of the characteristic ‘zap’ sound that is produced when an insect gets electrocuted. Though the impendence of power supply is not enough to drive hazardous current through a human’s body, as a precaution to prevent pets and peoples from touching the high voltage grid, the bug zappers are placed inside a protective cage. Some models of bug zappers come with trays fitted around it to collect the electrocuted insects.

There are variants in the models of bug zappers. One variant is electric flyswatter. It is shaped like a tennis racquet with strings of electric wire. When you push the switch, a high voltage is sustained between two contiguous grids. When an insect comes in contact with both grids, it gets electrocuted. The wires of the grid are live only when the switch is pressed. If by chance you touch it when the switch is pressed, you may get a sharp but harmless shock. An associated device is called the electric flea comb. This bug zapper is in the form of a fine toothed comb with which you can comb the hair of your pet to kill the fleas, lice or other insects hiding in their fur. The insects and their eggs get destroyed due to the high voltage between the alternate teeth. However, to make it secure for the pet and people, the teeth’s tips have been insulated.
Bug zappers are immensely useful for both indoor and outdoor purpose. You can eat, play, work and sleep in a totally bug free atmosphere thanks to these devices. Many infections and diseases caused by certain insects in the environment can be prevented because of the bug zappers. If you are arranging for a party or any other gathering in an open area, keeping bug zappers becomes essential to ensure that your guests remain comfortable and can enjoy to the fullest.
The bug zappers also have certain disadvantages. The primary disadvantage is that the bug zappers do not work effectively when it comes to killing insects that bite. The second disadvantage of bug zappers is that the mist containing the parts of the electrocuted insect can spread up to seven feet from the bug zapper. This can lead to contamination of the air with thousands of viruses and bacteria which might get inhaled or can settle on food, etc. This is the reason why scatter proof designs are being invented.
